Spearmint Tea to Reduce Facial Hair
Spearmint Tea to Reduce Facial Hair. Spearmint tea helps women with excessive body hair. A few cups of spearmint tea help women remove facial hair and excessive body hair, as indicated by several experts in Turkey.
Women with excess body hair (hirsutism) who drank two cups of spearmint tea for five days significantly decreased the level of testosterone, the team led by Dr. Mehmet Numan Tamer of Suleyman Demirel University, Isparta reported. Conventional treatments for hirsutism point to high levels of the male hormone and include oral contraceptives, to prevent the production of this hormone, or drugs to block the way the body responds to them.
The study results were published in the Phytotherapy Research journal. Researchers had already proven that drinking spearmint tea reduced libido in some men, which prompted them to investigate the use of green mint to treat hirsutism.
This disorder is characterized by excessive hair growth on the face, breasts and pubis, and affects 5 percent of women. It would be related to the level of androgens (male hormones) in the body. The authors asked 21 women with hirsutism to drink a tea made with a spoonful of spearmint leaves twice daily. Twelve women had PCOS and the rest, hirsutism known cause. The results after five days, the levels of testosterone (the biologically active form) of the participants had decreased, although the total testosterone level remained stable. Levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and estrogen increased. Triglycerides dropped significantly. Women with high levels of the male hormone also have high amount of triglycerides, insulin resistance and obesity. Spearmint can be an alternative to antiandrogenic treatment for mild hirsutism.
