For garnishing:
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped
- Kalwanji seeds
- Butter for brushing
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, strain together the flour, baking powder, baking soda.
- Then in a separate bowl, add warm milk, sugar, salt, oil and yogurt. Mix it well.
- Then gradually add warm milk mixture into the flour to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
- Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for at least 30 minutes to allow it to rise slightly.
- After the dough has rested, divide it into equal-sized balls (about the size of a small lemon).
- Dust a rolling surface with a little flour. Take one dough ball, flatten it, and roll it out into an oval or round shape, about 1/4-inch thick.
- Sprinkle some kalwanji seeds and chopped coriander leaves on one side of the rolled dough and lightly press so they stick.
- Heat a tawa or flat pan on medium-high heat. Ensure it’s very hot before adding the naan.
- Lightly dampen one side of the naan with water using a pastry brush or fingers; this helps the naan stick to the tawa and prevents it from falling off when you flip it.
- Place the naan on the hot tawa, water side down.
- Cook for 1-2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form and the bottom has golden-brown spots.
- Flip the entire tawa over a direct flame (if using a gas stove) to cook the top side of the naan. This will give it a charred, tandoor-like effect.
- Hold it over the flame for a few seconds until you see char marks, then flip the tawa back and remove the naan.
- Remove the naan from the tawa, brush it generously with melted butter, and serve hot.
- These buttery, soft naans pair perfectly with curries, kebabs, or any Indian dish. Enjoy!
Tip: If you’re using an electric stove, you can flip the naan directly on the tawa and cook both sides without using direct flame, though it may not have as much char.
