Dal Chawal, or dal rice, is a quintessential comfort food in many South Asian households, particularly in India and Pakistan. It’s a simple yet hearty dish consisting of lentils (dal) cooked with rice, often seasoned with aromatic spices.
Kali Masoor dal is a popular type of lentil widely used in South Asian cuisines. It is rich in protein, fiber, and various nutrients, making it a nutritious addition to meals.

Here’s a basic recipe to make Dal Chawal:

Cilantro Lime Rice Recipe

Ingredients:

  1. Kali masoor – 2 cups
  2. Onion – 1
  3. Tomato – 1
  4. Spring onion – 1
  5. Ginger garlic paste – 1 tbsp
  6. Chilli flakes – 1 tsp
  7. Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  8. Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  9. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  10. Salt to taste
  11. Kasoori methi – 1 tbsp

For Tadka:

  1. Cooking oil – 1/4 cup
  2. Garlic cloves chopped 5-6
  3. Green chillies – 3 to 4
  4. Dry whole red chillies – 3 to 4
  5. White cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  6. Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
  7. Degi mirch – 1 tsp
  8. Fresh coriander leaves

Keto Spicy Cauliflower Rice

Method:

  • Wash and soak the dal for 30 minutes.
  • In a clay pot add soaked dal, onion, tomato, spring onion, ginger garlic paste, chilli flakes, cumin powder, red chili powder, turmeric powder, salt, kasoori methi and water.
  • Cover and cook until dal is tender.
  • In a pan heat up cooking oil. Add chopped garlic, green chillies, whole dry red chillies, cumin seeds, mustard seeds and degi mirch, mix well.
  • Add the tadka to cooked dal (lentil) and cook it for 1-2 mins.
  • Garnish with fresh coriander, serve and enjoy with roti or rice

Boiled Rice:

  1. Soaked rice – 2 cups
  2. Oil – 1 tbsp
  3. Salt – to taste
  4. Butter – 2 tbsp
  5. Fresh coriander – 1/2 cup

Method:

  • Add water, salt and oil in a pan, bring to boil.
  • Add soaked rice and cook until rice are done.
  • Drain the water, add butter and coriander in cooked rice. Toss well and cover for 5 minutes.
  • Serve with dal.

Dal Chawal is often served with a side of sliced onions, cucumber, and tomato salad, or with a variety of chutneys. It’s a wholesome and comforting meal enjoyed by many.
