This disorder is characterized by excessive hair growth on the face, breasts and pubis, and affects 5 percent of women. It would be related to the level of androgens (male hormones) in the body. The authors asked 21 women with hirsutism to drink a tea made with a spoonful of spearmint leaves twice daily. Twelve women had PCOS and the rest, hirsutism known cause. The results after five days, the levels of testosterone (the biologically active form) of the participants had decreased, although the total testosterone level remained stable. Levels of luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone, and estrogen increased. Triglycerides dropped significantly. Women with high levels of the male hormone also have high amount of triglycerides, insulin resistance and obesity. Spearmint can be an alternative to antiandrogenic treatment for mild hirsutism.
