Eating Disorders are a Mental illness

Eating disorders are a group of mental illnesses that are attributed to unhealthy eating habits which may include insufficient or excessive food take and sometimes, over excessive exercise. If not treated, an eating disorder could result crippling weakness, or worse, death. Although people believe that women are more likely to have an eating disorder, in actuality, men are just as capable of being affected. However, the majority of patients in both genders are adolescents and the biggest cause is society’s expectations for the body image, as well as a distorted self-image. Other psychiatric disorders can also be responsible.

There are several types of eating disorders, but the two most common are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

Patients are usually dangerously underweight as they refuse to eat a healthy amount of food, as they are afraid that any amount of calories will increase their weight. Just like all eating disorders, anorexics have a horribly distorted self-image that makes them feel fat even if they are the farthest thing from it. Sometimes, anorexia includes provoked vomiting, even when there’s nothing to purge.

The disorder is mostly a cycle of binge episodes – eating excessive food after a period of restraining – that is immediately vomited out. Bulimics are usually at a healthy weight when the disorder first comes into affect, and in the majority of cases, unlike anorexia, weight loss doesn’t happen. Some patients invest in laxatives and other such weight loss methods that they consume instead of the appropriate nutrients that they need.
