How to Make Kashmiri Roth

Roth usually prepared at the time of the Kashmiri festival, ‘Pun’ in the month of September. Roth is prepared and puja is performed to invoke gods for blessings for prosperity and good luck. Roth is also made for weddings, but that kind is usually baked in an oven.


  1. Flour – 2 cup
  2. Ghee – ½ cup
  3. Sugar – ¾ cup
  4. Water – 1 ½ cup
  5. Black cardamom – 3 (only crushed seeds)
  6. Poppy seeds – ¼ cup
  7. Oil – for fry


Take a pan, add sugar and water, cook until sugar dissolves. Now mix ghee and crushed cardamoms seeds in flour and make dough with sugar syrup. Leave for 20 minutes. Divide into 1 ½ inch balls and roll to ¼ inch thick. Prick with a knife or fork, so that the Roth does not puff up while frying. Sprinkle generously with poppy seeds and press them down. preferably serve with sheer chai or pink tea.
