Chili con Carne: How to Make Chilli con Carne without Slow Cooker

Ingredients:

  1. Olive oil – 1 tbsp
  2. Medium yellow onion – 1 diced
  3. 90% lean ground beef – 1 pound
  4. Chili powder – 2 1/2 tbsp
  5. Ground cumin – 2 tbsp
  6. Granulated sugar – 2 tbsp
  7. Tomato paste – 2 tbsp
  8. Garlic powder – 1 tbsp
  9. Salt – 1 1/2 tsp
  10. Ground black pepper – 1/2 tsp
  11. Ground cayenne pepper* – 1/4 tsp (optional)
  12. Beef broth – 1 1/2 cup
  13. Petite diced tomatoes – 1 can (15 oz)
  14. Red kidney beans, drained and rinsed – 1 can (16 oz)
  15. Tomato sauce – 1 can (8 oz)

Instructions to prepare classic chili recipe:

  • Add the olive oil to a large soup pot and place it over medium-high heat for two minutes.
  • Add the onion. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the ground beef to the pot. Break it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6-7 minutes, until the beef is browned, stirring occasionally.
  • Add the chili powder, cumin, sugar, tomato paste, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and optional cayenne. Stir until well combined.
  • Add the broth, diced tomatoes (with their juice), drained beans, and tomato sauce. Stir well.
  • Bring the liquid to a low boil. Then, reduce the heat (low to medium-low) to gently simmer the chili, uncovered, for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove the pot from the heat. Let the chili rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes:

I typically skip the cayenne pepper because I have a young kiddo. Then, I put out some hot sauce for those adults that want to add some spiciness to their chili.

Ingredients:

  1. Beef Undercut – 1 kg cut in strips
  2. Eggs – 2
  3. Crushed Red Pepper – 1 tbsp
  4. Corn flour – 6 tbsp
  5. Salt – 1 tsp
  6. Chopped garlic – 2 tbsp
  7. Grated Ginger – 2 tbsp
  8. Sugar – 1 tsp
  9. Oil – for frying
  10. Capsicums – 2 cut in julienne
  11. Green Chilies – 6 to 7 sliced
  12. Spring Onions – 3 sliced lengthwise
  13. Soya Sauce – 5 tbsp
  14. Oil – 6 tbsp

Method:

  • Take a bowl, add beef strips, eggs, red crushed chili, salt, corn flour, ginger garlic paste, mix and leave for 1 and half hour.
  • Heat up oil in a pan and deep fry beef strips. Remove and keep it aside
  • Heat up oil in another pan, stir fry ginger and garlic, add spring onion, capsicum, green chilies, sugar, fry for 1 minute.
  • Then add beef, soya sauce, mix well and serve hot with vegetable fried rice.
