Moong Masoor Ki Daal

Here’s a delicious recipe for Moong Masoor Ki Daal, a comforting and nutritious Indian/Pakistani lentil dish that combines the flavors of moong dal (yellow split mung beans) and masoor dal (red lentils). This recipe is simple to make and pairs wonderfully with rice or flatbread.

Ingredients for the Daal:
- Masoor Dal – 1 cup
- Moong Dal (yellow) – 1 cup
- Turmeric powder- 1/2 tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
- Kasoori methi (fenugreek leaves) – 1 tbsp
- Cumin powder – 1 tsp
- Wash and Soak the dal for 30mins
- In a pan add the soaked dal, Water, turmeric powder and salt
For the Tadka (Tempering):
Keto Spicy Cauliflower Rice
- Oil or ghee – 3 tbsp
- Fenugreek seeds – 1/2 tsp
- Kalwanji – 1/4 tsp
- Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp
- Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
- Garlic cloves – 3 chopped
- Dry red chillies (whole) – 4 tp 5
- Curry leaves – 2 to 3
- Green chilies – 2 to 3 chopped
- Fresh coriander leaves, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
- Wash the moong and masoor dals together in water until the water runs clear.
- Soak the dals for about 15-20 minutes (optional but recommended for quicker cooking).
- In a pot, add the washed dal with 4 cups of water, salt, turmeric powder, red chilli powder, kasoori methi and cumin powder.
- Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Cook for about 20-25 minutes until the lentils are soft and start to blend into the water. You can adjust the water based on your desired consistency.
- Mash slightly with a spoon or ladle to make the daal creamy.
Prepare the Tadka (Tempering):
- In a separate pan, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat.
- Add the fenugreek seeds, kalwanji, ustard seeds, cumin seeds, garlic, dry red chillies, curry leaves and green chilies, let them sizzle until fragrant.
- Pour the cooked tadka over the prepared daal and mix well. Taste and adjust salt or spices as needed.
- Turn off the heat, garnish with fresh coriander leaves and add a dash of lemon juice if desired.
Serving Suggestions:
Serve this warm Moong Masoor Ki Daal with:
- Steamed basmati rice
- Chapati or naan
- Pickles and papad for a complete meal
